Does it have to be bonsai tree then pot or can it sometimes be the other way round?
For instance, I have some juniper bonsais in training but I envisage them to go into muddy brown and muddy grey pots. I saw a few I liked and decided to buy some, but is that a bad move in the long run?

I am not sure if I understand this question. I think what you are asking is. Is it okay to buy pots that are pretty and have them around until I find a nice bonsai for it? I am sure a lot of people here have empty bonsai pots around. Maybe you'll find a beautiful, hand made, 名媛直播 pot, for a great price, but you don't have any tree for it yet. I don't see any reason for not buying it, as it might become handy in the future.
But usually what people do is they train their trees. And with time, they'll exactly know what type of pot they need, and then they go for it and buy it.

I have quite a collection of pots. I have purchased pots as I liked them and had an idea of what I wanted to put in them. So far that hasn't worked out though.
If I have a tree that needs to go into a bonsai pot, I try and find a matching one, I do not grow trees to suit a pot.
A tree grows, evolves, changes. While it grows, you may change your mind about your tree and decide to go in another direction with it. Maybe the tree develops in such a way that you decide to change its style. Maybe you want it smaller than anticipated, or larger. Usually, you'd develop the tree first, and then find a matching pot.

Thanks Auk, I'll have to make sure I only buy a pot when the time is right!
I seemed to have gathered about 20 pots because I liked them and thought they would suit my bonsai's that are not even ready yet. Time will tell if I use them well.
