This is my 2nd year doing this. I enjoyed it last year, I like BBQ and bonsai is perfect when I'm outside. I get to admire and work on them as I cook. This is the 2nd year for both. The maple (I believe that's what it is) was a sapling that grew with from a seed that fell from the neighbors tree. The only thing I did was chop the top before winter. I let the hornbeam grow out and I made some cuts before spring.

I was wondering, should both trees be in a training pot or will they grow fine in the pots they are in?

You should move it to a bigger pot or to the ground if you want it to grow and fatten up. Not only it will grow faster, but it will also require less of your attention. Shallow pots are for trees that have develop a highly efficient root mass system; thin roots prevailing, and very dense. These are usually on a state where you are happy to show the tree as it is, and usually working on details. Shallow pots also need watering, almost daily, and lots and lots of care.
In short, make your life easier and move to a bigger pot or ground.

Thanks for the info. I don't mind watering daily. I do want it to grow "faster". I plan on moving in the next couple of months so the ground is out of the question. I will either buy or make training pots tomorrow. Gives me another thing to do.
Getting off topic but I have been slowly getting my significant other into the art. I hope I can get her into it. You know how it goes
what's MINE is hers and what's hers MINE.

I took the advice and moved them to bigger "pots". I went to home Depot and bought some wood and made it myself. It's easy and cheap altogether it cost me 1.49usd and some nails I had laying around. I know I will have to make bigger ones in a couple of years.
I think I should start a new thread or if possible change it.
This has become a progression thread.
