How to develop the trunk?

Hello, I have a Brazilian rain tree (it's my first bonsai). I've had it for a little less than a half a year. It is thriving and putting off new growths. I like the size of it right now, but I read about trunk/height proportion, and I'd like to thicken the trunk. How can I work on that? I have read that the more leaves there are the more the trunk will go to be able to provide for them. I am letting the leaves go a little wild to help this process. Are there any other tips for trunk development?
