I received my first bosai tree for a Christmas but I have no idea where to start. I believe it is a juniper. I have experience with growing herbs and succulents but not bonsai. I would like to repot the tree but not sure what would be suitable. Also, soil suggestions?

One of the most asked questions is about junipers. Now that it's Christmas, this same question is asked on a daily basis.

Sure, but as you probably can imagine, this is the period lots of people get a "bonsai" as a gift, all of them new to the art.

Here, in the northern hemisphere, it's not the best time, of year to start such things. Maybe treat it as a bouquet of flowers.
No, I'd try to keep it alive, I'm nuts.
It needs to be outside. ... half those things are dead before you get them anyway.

Welcome to the site. Indeed, as Auk sais, read up, learn. Ask after searching.
It is a great timwe to start working bonsai. I am in the middle of wiring frenzy; Wired 10 trees over the last 3 days. Only 40 more to go before spring. Then repotting in March, April. And then it is waiting for the green to show.
Have fun.
