How do I keep my Satsuki Azalea dormant, yet alive through the winter in Chicago? Chicago winters are too cold to leave my bonsai outside. Yet, the tree needs to go through its dormant stage. Any advice would be welcome.

"Older, larger trees can withstand a degree or two of frost, but younger plants must be protected. A cold greenhouse is ideal but if you do not have this facility try to position trees somewhere where they receive some protection from the worst of the wind and rain, maybe under the staging or at the base of a hedge. In either case be prepared to provide additional frost protection in the form of bubble wrap or insulating fleece during cold spells" etcetera.

Sorry, I don't know how much -10 degrees Fahrenheit is.

If you want, get a covering. If it is transparent, maybe it will work. That is the best advice I can give because I live in Texas.

-10 Fahrenheit is about -23 c. I would go with the cold greenhouse if possible. or a garage for non-coniferous plants.

Chicago winters are, afaik, too cold for satsuki to survive without a lot of added protection. Do you have rooms that are cold, say, between 0 and 10 degrees c ? That would be better for winter than outside. Also, ask around locally.

Where did you get your tree? There are strains which are hardier than others. So one might die at a few degrees frost, and some may live. But chicago winter is too cold for all, i think

You could but..

.. they are dark, so it needs to be fairly cold. Plant do use their leaves in winter untill they freeze
.. they are made to be dry. This may hamper survival

I know some people in the tropics do however use fridges for wintering temperates. Maybe google a bit.
