LOL.. Yes, I did.

I quit studying at some point. Flew to Canada. Worked for 3 months in Tobacco. Then travelled overland to cental america, with the aim to reach the outh of Chili. But money was an issue, and spending a few hundred dollars for a flight from Panama into colombia (Overland was not an option) was enopugh to stop that short. I then found work in Costa Rica, where I lived for around 5 months, most of the time working for earthwatch on their leatherback turtle protection programme.

All in all, I have lived & worked in canada, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, the UK, South Africa, Kenya and Australia. Currently I live in Germany..

That's weird. I'm at work, less than half an hour ago a colleague told me 'they have floating bonsai now' (which triggered my Pavlov-reaction: "that's not bonsai")... and now I read the same here.

(Maybe not so weird. Guess it was in the news and went viral or so?)

Actually... the trees I saw in that video are quite nice.

Oh my, oh my... 8 countries and 4 continents I?ve counted already. Amazing! I have only worked and lived (simultaneously that is) in Cuba and Spain. I?d love to repeat that experience somewhere else though. You are some sort of "modern wanderer". Tobacco worker, earthwatcher and right now I believe you work in a college environment too, no?... Quite a wide spectrum and CV. Also, following your comment I believe that from your time in Costa Rica comes your nickname... Ain?t that right? ;)

Great regards my friend!

How about this...
You have to remember that not every plan works out.
For example, here's a cork bark elm that I got for free with the pot (imported from Japan) and did a bit of training on. It is now in the pot and appears to be recovered.

It's in my super professional mame bonsai photography studio (the kitchen sink) so the trunk didn't show up too well
Here's a closer picture of the trunk

I put the flash on for that one so it went a bit dark in the background... for some reason...

Anyway, even though the tree doesn't look too good and definitely needs a bit of work to become nicer, It's important to me (and I think it doesn't look too bad for ?5).
My sister summed it up perfectly; "It's cute. Can I have it?"

Despite it being a non-sai, it isn't too bad and could definitely be considered good looking by some. Let's just call it naturalistic ;)

Nah... Non-sai: Nonsense + bonsai. Your tree doesn't belong in this category.
I guess we didn't have a definition for what non-sai is though :)

I thought it was using the prefix non- to mean 'expressing negation or absence' so the definition would be 'not bonsai.'

What would you call my tree, then? Something like "not as bonsai as bonsai, but still not quite as non-sai as non-sai"?

Well... as said, we didn't have a definition yet :D
This thread was more about things that are not and never will be bonsai, like bananas and coconuts, silly trees that are sold as true masterpieces for obscene prices. Your tree is none of that.

What would you call my tree, then? Something like "not as bonsai as bonsai, but still not quite as non-sai as non-sai"?

A pre-bonsai ?

Hahahaha i just found this while i was looking for a book.
The funny thing is that a year ago i put a potato in a pot and thought i could make it a bonsai lol after a few months it had grown a trunk of about 2 cm diameter but by then i started understanding the concept of bonsai so i chuked it in the bin, it is now a " Bin-sai " lol.
