I love this example:

When people see my tree, I often get the question 'nice, but what's that white part, you don't see that in nature?' about the shari on my juniper. The photo is great proof that it IS natural - and it's a great example of bonsai in nature (BTW Chris and LB, when you find the location and plan a trip to dig it up, I'd like to come too :D ).

This question is very intersting as you say. Chrisv, looked at the FB page and th pictures are stunning. I can see how the images link well with what auk said about bonsai not being EXACT copies but with certain exaggerations and differences. This question is interesting indeed.

Can i come too? :( :D

One thing I think I need to add.
While certain features are emphesized, everything does need to be in proportion.
Ficus Ginseng therefore is NOT good starting material as the roots are completely out of proportion.
There are examples where this problem was corrected, and the Ginseng was turned into something that somewhat looks like a bonsai, but it takes a lot of time, work and knowledge, and such examples are rare.

I just hate it when f.ginseng are sold as bonsai. Proportion i think is very important for me. The thing with the roots of the ginseng ficus, it is the same as oak is a bad option for mame and large leaved lime a bad option for shohin?
