I recently stumbled across this tree on Facebook market place, and it immediately got my attention. It is located about 280km from where I live, but I am considering asking the owner to ship it. Do you guys think it would survive being shipped this time of year? (some freezing nights, and getting colder) maybe if it was insulated or something? Personally I think it is underpriced at $100CAD for such an old tree. What do you think it's worth? I had a small seedling in the same species, but due to a recent scale infestation, I had to throw it out after 10 sprays of insecticide spray, I could see there was nothing left to do for the plant. I no longer have the bugs in my home, and plan to keep this tree isolated from my other houseplants, if I choose to buy it.?
Here is what the owner had with the listing:"Hawaian umbrella tree (Schefflera arboricola) shaped in bonsai style, roots over wood shape. 30+ years old. Pot is plastic 20" x 17". Overall height is 27 ". Plastic drip tray included. Will do well indoors near a window."

If you like it and can afford it, why not?
Shipping may be an issue, they die instantly if exposed to frost.
I do not trust this tree is 30 years old. I have seen that old umbrellas and they have at least thigh sized trunk. Check out Nigel Saunders 20 year or so old umbrella and you will understand that this tree is either very badly grown or not as old as the seller states.

I agree with tropfrog, not well grown or styled, in a bonsai pot and called bonsai Does not look that old either. I would not pay that much.

Yeah, its not perfect, but with guidance from here on the forums, I think I could fix it up a bit. He said he might have someone coming this way to deliver it in the near future.?I offered $70, we will see what he says. Do you think I could grow it under a grow light for the winter? Or just let it go dormant.?

It will not go dormant, you will be keeping it in a warm environment, and it is a tropical plant so grows all year.

Oh, I thought that even tropical plants would go dormant in a warm environment if its a temperate climate. Would a grow light help?

You need to research where this plant comes from. Does it get high light or not I have no idea, you need to look it up. It is not a good species for bonsai and I don't have one or know anyone who does. From the look of the leaves I would think quite low in the canopy so a lower light requirement, but that is a guess.

One of the few house plants that do not get leggy or weak during the swedish winter. I tried some in my greenhouse, they got totally sun burned. Absolutely an understory low light species.
