Is this a Japanese Elm?

These trees were growing in raised beds at my work and they were gonna throw them away so I took them home and was wondering if they look like japanese elm or zelkova serrata...just need more opinions to identify please and thank you.

If it was here, I would guess hornbeam. If it is in Japan it may very well be japanese elm. They are so similar and environment makes a difference In how they look.
But the background tells me it is self sown, so where it is and what trees can be found there makes a difference.

I'm located in washington state...but after you saying hornbeam I looked it up and the American Hornbeam grows?native in the pacific northwest so that is probably what it is....thank you

It's an American elm tree (ulmus americana). Could also be zelkova serrata but definitely not any known species of hornbeam. Cheers!
