Hello from Houston, I am having a debate on what I should try as my first specimen. Does anyone have any cool recommendations?

What is climate like in Houston?

Hot summers of 110 degrees, 95% humidity. Very sunny but can be very cloudy too. Winters of 40 degrees, maybe sometimes 30 degrees.

Not my type of climate. But I guess olive would be a good species. Maybe someone in similar climate chip in soon.

If the unit is f, my answer above about olive tree might apply.

Best is to look around your area in forests and gardens, what species is most common? That is the best species for you to start with.

Sheck what bonedry bonsai on Youtube is doing. He is in northern California, I think similar environment?

A city like Houston almost certainly has a bonsai club. Get with them, and find out what trees work in the climate there. They can give advice on winter care for specific species, sources for tools and soil components, and lots of other data.
