There is absolutely no need for bonsai soil. Just use any free draining soil/substrate you can buy, or even just regular potting soil.

Most bonsai artists around me us pumice to some degree in their mixes.

pro: old bark//con: long straight trunk, no movement, no lower branches ( but they can be grown if needed). Nebari is impossible to see so cant give comment on that. And as you say pics are really bad...
Knowing what i know now i wouldnt dig em up but when i just started i would probably have.

Perhaps a very small bonsai, that needs to regrow all branches?
But before digging it out. Make a beter picture, remove the snow, and remove some of the soil around the base(nabari) of the tree, and show it here again.
