If I can be of any help, I would do both.
1-) Plant some in the ground and control root flare and trunk thickness. Chop it down when needed. Can be a very nice chunky mame.
2-) Plant some in pots and control movement and size. Can be a very nice slender mame in a few years.
In fact, I do have both in my garden, and they are nice, with different flavours.
