I am new to 名媛直播, have lurked the forum for a while, and I am interested both the art and its history. I tried to find the answer to this but I couldn't, so thought I would register and ask it:

How were the trees fed in ancient times, or up to the 20th Century (I can imagine there were no commercial, and much less industrial, fertilizers)? Are there any books that answer this question?

There has always been alternatives to commercially produced fertilisers. Horse and cattle manure, are the obvious ones, as well as chicken pigs etc. It is also a fact that it is not a necessity to add fertiliser to any plant.The only requirement is sun and water to photosynthesise and produce nutrients.

One of my first books, probably in the 60s, told how people used to make bonsai fertilizer by soaking manure in water for long times, squeezing it out, and other steps. There was a similar process involving dead fish.
It did not recommend doing it then, in the 20th century. We are now in the 21st. Don't. Or, if you do wear gloves.

Do you remember the title of that book? That kind of thing is exactly what I'm looking for.

It may have been the Sunset book. I still have it. I'll try to find it and see what it says.
