What to do? was created by Doggy

Hi, I am Rami and I have this tree. Yesterday I dug it up from my garden and put it in a potting mix of 40 percent soil amendment mix and 60 percent builders sand. I hope to make it into a 8 inch tall bonsai with a informal upright or literati style. I would like to know the species of this tree as well as what branches should be cut of. If it is also possible please tell me if coffee grounds are effective fertilizer after two months of recovery.

There is an app called PlantNet which is the best way to get the species.

If you Google coffee grounds as fertilizer you will find that coffee grounds are perfect fertilizer, and that they are plant killers. They will encourage each worms, but they will also kill them. I mix some used grounds in with azaleas and some others. I also just toss them out on the lawn.

YMMV

Thank you. Do you also know how long I should grow it before I can actually style it?

Years. You shouldn't think in terms of length of time. You can't say five years, so I will start pruning, etc., in 2025. Think in terms of when the tree gets to be so thick and when it has branches so big. That may be in five years or ten, depending on what you want, how big a container it is in, how much sun, fertilizer, and water it gets, etc.

Coffee grounds are not fertiliser, digging at this time of year is not a good idea. If it survives it will be years before it can be styled, I cannot see a species like this as Literati. Using builder sand also was not a good idea, it will not help drainage. Do not try to change the soil, leave it alone no fertiliser until and unless it lives and starts to grow. That could be next year. It dies bot need fertiliser to survive. I think it might be Wisteria? They do not like being disturbed and will sulk for years, I have one. One other thing it MUST be outside.

You should really not be thinking styles now, or even bonsai at all: you have to keep it alive, good horticultural care to let it grow, thats all. It is way way too soon to think/do anything else.
