How exactly do I measure the height for a Shohin bonsai tree?
Is the measurement:

1. From the tabletop, which includes the bonsai pot, all the way up to the treetop?
Or.
2. From the top of the soil level to the treetop, excluding the bonsai pot?

Similarly I suppose.....Is the width measure, if there is a guideline, just the tree or the bonsai pot and the tree width combined?

#2 is the answer: from the top of the pot to the top of the tree.

About width, I'm not sure there's a limit, as I've never heard it cited. But I would assume aesthetics would somehow limit how wide a 20cm tree can be, if not else...

Depending on the show you want to send it to, it may involve other rules. "Feels and looks shohin" is also a very clear rule ..

I was on the saddle between two mountains in North Carolina where the wind blew pretty strongly constantly from east to west. There was a spruce tree about 5 feet/1 2/3 meter tall. On the windward side the top branches were millimeter sized, bottom maybe 5 inches, 10 or 12 cm. On the other side the top branches were a little larger and got longer slowly until the bottom three or four. The bottom branch was about 27 feet, maybe 8 meters. That was 11 steps long. It looked sort of like your picture.

No, no picture. This was about 1974 and I hadn't saved up the money for a camera. I would love to go back and see if it is still around.
