When does spring begin? was created by Ivan Mann

Today is January 7, which usually means winter here in the Northern hemisphere. Most of the elms have leaves coming out. They are all rootbound so I knew I had to repot and was thinking in some conventional spring time month, like March. Ha.

The forest planting was due a major training effort, since they have been growing untouched for several years. That will take up most of Saturday, which was not on my plans.

Spring comes whenever they think it comes.

Nah, I just know that early march is going to be busy. Work will get met abroad two or three weeks between Feb 28 and April 15. So I get a headstart with a few trees. (And I am annoyingly arrogant thinking that many treespecies can deal easily with it).

LB after repotting, do you place them protected in a greenhouse?

Here where i live, the first daffodil are starting to flower. Normaly that happens a month or 2 later in the year.

Not per se. I might move them away when it starts to get frosty. But I also move trees into sheds when I wire them up or with sensitive bark / deadwood. Not sticts rules. Just what I feel like. But.. Winter here is a joke at the moment.

It's one thing to say, well I have nothing to do this weekend, maybe I'll repot a tree.

It is another to have four trees tell me, surprise, you thought you were doing something else, but your plans just changed.

And, now, I have to pay more attention to the weather for a while.

Adding to the confusion, I have several azaleas which bloom in the fall - September and October. One of them has flowers coming out right now.

So, this is January, and four trees think it is spring while one thinks it is fall. Looks like tomorrow will be busy.

I spent about three hours on the 7 tree forest and it was fun.

The three year old grandson helped quite a bit. I think he was surprised when I told him to put his hands in the dirt and play with it. He helped put the soil mix in the pot, helped sprinkle the used coffee grounds in, used the bamboo stick to push the soil mix under the roots, wiped his hands on his shirt, and had a good time, too.
