how do you prepare the avacado seeds? do you split them or do you just clean them up and suspended over the water? i have a hinkering for some guacamole and eventually will have a seed or 2 to grow, plus it will be cool for the kiddos to watch.

All you do is wash off the gunk and poke toothpicks in the pit...and wait 4 months. haha.
One thing about the race...my lemon will continue to grow in winter.

I just burried the avocado seed in good potting soil, placed a plastic baggie over the thing and placed it in a south-facing window. 4 weeks later a plant appeared.. The thing has now grown it's second 3' trunc (The first I let dry out a bit, and tied in loops to be only 4" tall, and is still living). The plant now has about 10 growing points, after just 1 year..

I peel off the outer layers, poke toothpicks in the top near the pointy end, and suspend the flat end in some water It can take them a while to germinate but they are very interesting to watch, especially when suspended in water because you can see everything happen.
