What are the plastic wraps around the lower branches doing?

These shaped houseplants normally get branches grafted on them: The mass produced trunk is put in a container. Then a small-leave ficus is grafted on the trunk to create a plant with finer foliage. The plastic wraps are there normally to keep the grafts in place while they merge with the trunk.

IMHO, such house plants do not belong on a bonsai forum, unless when they are intended to be shown as part of a progression.
