So I picked up this young larch from the garden center today and got it into a makeshift grow box. I opend up the rootball a bit, and washed out a good portion of the field soil, but didn't trim. My instinct tells me to wait until next winter to trunk chop, but what are your thoughts.

What do you consider a trunk chop? Note that larch is VERY resistent to creating new buds, and mght die before doing so.

I think you can do with a lot more trunk on there, so leaving it a year is fine.

I mean cutting it back to a new leader... not a chop like with a tree that back-buds. there are a few potential spots.

so an update on this tree is in order.. I haven't posted in a long, long time. I might have some issues with the apex, but I am happy with the way this has gone.. I'm going to need to sort the root ball, which currently has a lot of(too much) space.?

I decided to put this tree into a smaller pot. the big grow pot was nice.. but as I thought about root ball reduction after it grows in that huge pot for a few years, I decided to get it into something smaller.. it is about the height I want it to be anyway. I'll get up a new picture when the buds are fully opened.?
