It happens naturally in some species like old Maples and Crape Mirtles (such as this one on my street).
Difficult to replicate in bonsai, but the Japanese (Ebihara) manage to do it.
Why does it happen?

High root density in a confined space, over time merging? Possibly due to water only being available in the plantsquare?

I have seen many ficus with big block nebari in Sampa too.

I think the epibhara merged roots require one more technique that he has not explained. Not many replicate his results..
