i bought this tree in the late summer of 2013 at Danny Use's nursery here in Belgium..
at that time i was still planning to have it styled during a lesson there.. but due to some private issues i couldn't attend to any lessons anymore..
early 2014 i took it on myself to style the tree..
this image is during styling
i tried to style it without cutting any low branches to keep possibilities open for the future and did some tests on the styling
seen from the side:
from the top view you can see how open the foliage pads still are
so early spring 2014 it looked like this:
early 2015 i reworked the top a bit and took off the wire.
you can clearly see the new shoots
in this image you can see the growth and the pads filling out.. i let the bottom pads grow freely and i contained the top ones by pinching new growth
autumn 2015 the tree had filled out nicely
early 2016
rewired the main branches and created some gently detail on the main branches..
since i still have to write the smaller branches in a later stadium, this isn't as visible yet.
the accent branch looks like the foliage is running upwards, but once detailed, there will be 4 platforms with a minor (few mm) difference in hight between the pads.. like the bigger one which is already visible on the left of the new apex
the shoot at the bottom left can grow for a while to thicken that branch..
in any aspect, a very cool and rewording species which sadly enough, you don't see that often..
you can see my pot is slightly tilted since i adjusted the working angle a bit.. but since cedars dislike repotting, this is something that i'll do next year.. depending on what the tree tells me..

Always love to see the progressions of the trees. It is inspiring in most cases, also a nice source of learning a bit everytime. And regarding this tree in particular, yes I like its evolution but I feel that your previous design, the one from 2014 presents a more balanced state, I mean in my eyes it resembles better the idea of a true 名媛直播 tree. In any case, you know your trees much better than I do and seeing your previous works I?m sure you?ll take this beautiful tree to the next step in the following years.
Please, do keep us updated on its evolution!

yeah, the early 2014 design "looked" good.. but wasn't.. the tree was too tall at that moment.
also, seeing multiple videos by experts, i followed their notion of keeping the apex short and compact and move ot forward a bit as this gives the tree an older and more compact look.
also it's hard to see the tree like this, since the potting angle needs to be changed.. i'd need to take a picture of how i look at the tree in some decent light..
the apex on my tree still has a long way to go.. the top and right and back side still have to be completely developped.
but knowing my tree this will only take a few years.
like that small branch going to the right at the top, there's also one going backwards.. these are completely new branches and will be used to create the top on that side.
what lies ahead will be more specific in pinching strong areas to strenghten the weaker areas and prevent them from getting too weak..
btw, i buy my pots on the net

Seeing all og these trees your posting I?ve noticed that you seem to be using the same substrate for a while. Could you expand on this? I mean, which substrate mix are you using?
Thanks in advance...

for my trees, placed under a clear cover to control watering but get enough sunlight i use
for conifers: a mixture of akadama and bims about (50/50) (and sometimes some organic)
for deciduous trees i mostly use pure akadama depending on the species.. some also get about 20% bims..
this very free-draining soil allows me to water and fertilise in a controlled way..
