Hello all!
Wanting some input on this year's styling of this red cedar (juniperus virginiana) material for the future bonsai structure. I collected it in 2010 & its progressed healthily so far. I've an idea shown in the sketch, which may also give an idea of what branch structure looks like under foliage.
The primary branch was wired down from vertical this past spring as you can see, but will be taking a further step this coming year.

And future pot: obviously smaller as root work progresses. Maybe stay with a rectangular pot, or go for something more rugged?

Thoughts?

I dont have any constructive input to offer (im literally brand new to bonsai), I just wanted to say it looks great! I love the sketch too, I think the rectangular pot looks great.

I don't either, as I'm new as well... but I wanted to say that's a beautiful tree! Love the trunk!

Good to see those words again. I lent my Naka books to a friend three years ago, and I haven't seen them since. He still uses them, though, which makes it worth it.

Interesting material, great drawing. However, I'm not fully convinced by the direction you are taking. The tree seems unbalanced to me. That's no criticism. I like the material and love the drawing, I wish we got more posts like these - this is actually what I would like to visit this forum for: getting inspired by good material and ideas.

I'm wondering: how flexible is the upper part of the tree?

I agree, the tree wants to go right but ends up going left. I think that a windswept-to-the-right style would be a lot more suitable.

This isn't criticism either, just my take on the design of the tree

May be unbaanced, but I like it. HOweverI have often been told my trees are unbalanced tooo

Looking at the sketch.. What would happen if you just keep the boottom 2 pads, and remove the top three, leaving a yin?

Yep, I fully agree. I had a similar first thought after seeing brkirkland22?s sketch... Wish I could draw like that :dry:

Oh, but I didn't say I don't like it. I certainly like the material and the drawing for the future design is great.
However, I'm just wondering if there are alternatives. How about tilting the tree some 30 degrees to the left, then bend the upper part of the trunk to the right? I wonder what that would look like.

What I am not too convinced about is the upper 2/3 of the trunk - it seems to long and straight compared to the base of the tree.
