Hi all,

2 years ago I went out to look for some yamadori birches, because I wanted to create one large penjing with birches. These were among the trees I collected:

2 years later I ordered a marble tray for them, 115x80cm large, oval shaped.

..so I started with designing the landscape, applying special coats of paint to make bottom of the stones to be used as well as surfaces on marble tray where I want to glue them rough and the next day after the paint dried out I started to glue them with flexible cement glue generally used to glue tiles on the floors and walls.

On the fouth day I started with planting the trees and finishing the landscape.

I used KETO from IBUKI to make walls

Then I filled in the substrate - pure zeolite that is my substrate of choice for all of my trees - and I watered it thoroughly.

I started positioning the trees

I wired them to the marble tray and then I added some more zeolite, and after that I covered it all with full 5kg pack of KETO, to make zeolite keep the moisture longer and so that moss have a solid surface to adhere to.

Little tree in the front isn?t wired, because there were no holes drilled for it as I originally wanted to use just some small grasses for that island, but I changed my mind, so I will have to drill them later ... if I don?t change my mind again.

And here is the thing after completion and a photosession I did for it 2 days later.
I am still not sure about the little tree in the front and might move it to the right or left later on, or remove it alltogether. But seeing it live, it really add a nice depth to the piece.

my wife loves birch trees... I'll have to be careful about showing here your penjing. :-)

Nice work though!

Mimo, amazona work as always!
Couldn't you have used Keto all the way, instead of Zeolite (I know all about the draining part, but...If one takes care of the watering...)?
Anyway, beautiful as always! Congrats!

Thanx lads.

Clicio - there is nothing better than zeolite in my opinion :) Yes, because of the draining part, oxygen supply, it is not degrading ... etc... :)

Here is the link to an article on my blog with even more detailed description, and of course better quality photos:

Zeolite is my favourite part as well, but on its own, it is too dry for me.
