I bought my bonsai almost 2 months ago and it was doing great with new growth and thick new leaves. Now the leaves are falling off and there is no new growth. Some of the leaves are green when they fall and some yellow. More recently they have turned lighter green and spotted. I have not changed the conditions: watering 1-2x a week, indoors, near a sunny window. I am including pictures of before and current tree condition. Please help!

Hard to tell.
I notice a few things: You are keeping it inside. I would move it outside, unless it happens to be freezing at your-abouts
You water one or 2 times a week. Do not wat on a schedule, but water when needed.
It is hard to tell what substrate the plant is in. It looks like it is solic stones. That is not ideal. You should ideally have a substrate that is able to absorp water.

I've never had a bonsai before so I'm not sure how dry it needs to get between watering and how much to water it each time. I have been just guessing.
The top layer of the bonsai is rocks but underneath is soil. There are drain holes on the bottom as well.
I was unsure about putting it outside since it gets very hot here (up to 90 degrees)

Take the top rocks off completely or you can't see the soil properly , you should wait till the top of the soil is completely dry but still a bit moist underneath then water it,you can check if its wet by putting a chopstick 3 or 4 cm in the soil and when you pull it out you can tell if it wet or not ,you can put it outside , put it in a shady place for the first month at least in the hottest hours of the day ( unless you mean 90 Celsius lol ) that should take care of it .
You say you've never had a bonsai , you still don't
You're tree is considered a mallsai or a mass produced plant in pot that is made to resemble a bonsai ( even tho it doesn't resemble one at all )
But it is a tree in a shallow pot so the care is similar even tho the soil is probably not the best for growing in a shallow pot , this will give you the chance to learn how to repot but this will have to wait till next spring .
While you are learning to take care of this plant I suggest you look into the art of bonsai as it is very interesting and very satisfying to learn

I will try to keep it outside on a shadier side to try to help it out. Any indication if I have been over or under watering it from the look of the leaves? Or any other issues that it may have?
