Hi, I'm new here, I recently bought a 名媛直播 from a local garden centre (my first ever one)
It did not say what type of bonsai it was, I have bought pruning scissors, 名媛直播 plantfeed and a "名媛直播 basics" book. I'm going through the index of the book to see which looks like mine but I can't seem to figure out which mine is.
Could someone please help with the attached photo I have included.
(For some reason this website is displaying my picture upside down lol)
I really want to have my bonsai as healthy as possible.
Thanks.

It's an upside down informal upright. typical poor quality plant. It is not something that can be kept inside, depending on what country you are in.

looks like a chinese elm... I second the not being inside... depending on how harsh your winters are.
The chinese elm that I have was kept as an indoor tree befor I got it... the growth it experienced this summer after putting it outside was incredible...Before that any slight change in place or lighting or anything for that matter caused leaf drop... It was so much stronger after after getting real sunlight. It is going into dormancy now, and I try to protect it from frost, if it gets well below freezing.

Thank you, When Summer comes round I'll make sure to keep it outside some days so it gets some natural sunlight, is it normal for some leaves to turn golden and fall off this time of year? And what time of the year do you recommend I prune it?
Thanks again, any help/info from people here is much appreciated.

Chinese Elms are Deciduous Trees (meaning they lose their leaves in Fall). Pruning is best done in the Spring before the growing season. Wirings is best done in the very first part of Fall (and removed before pruning). This is a general rule of thumb. Some trees can handle pruning twice a year.

Am I right in saying your from the uk. If so then we have had a cold snap the last few weeks but my elms have been out side and fine as long as the root ball does not experience temperatures of bellow -10 which don't happen very often and if it does just put them in a porch or cold house to take the edge off the freeze. As your tree have been indoors for a while and probably before you purchased it i would introduce it to outside gradually but eventually I would definitely leave it outside all year around as it is not a tropical tree it's a deciduous tree and needs dormant periods of 8 to 10 weeks every year to survive.

Also I would research into bonsai soil and the different effects different mediums can have on your tree. It looks as if your tree is still planted in the soil it was field grown in where ever it was mass produced probably China or Korea which is fine if it was still in the ground but now it is confined to a pot it will retain far to much moisture and there is a strong possibility of root rot if not Watered properly which is a tricky task to master when first starting out. My advice would be research chinese elm care on the Internet have a look how to do a repot and invest in some good free draining soil and repot your tree in spring.

Hi Rob yes I'm from the UK, would you suggest I put it in my conservatory for the next couple of months, it gets quite chilly in there, I have some Yukka plants that I keep in the conservatory at all times and they are really healthy.

As long as it gets plenty of good light in there and the temperatures do not fluctuate to much I mean it can't be almost freezing then the heating gets put on and it's suddenly 25° in there as it will get confused and probably drop all its leaves. But if it.
a. Gets plenty of light preferably south facing.
B. The temperatures in there are stable ie no heating.
Then it should be a good place to put it for now. Then in spring as the cold nights warm up a bit put it out side in a spot with plenty of light and slightly sheltered from the wind just watch out for late spring frosts that could damage the new growth. One thing I mentioned before when it does go outside in that soil you will need to keep an eye on it as you don't want it to stay wet from all the rain we get in spring best way to solve that is to repot in good bonsai soil you can get that from any UK bonsai nursery look at kazien bonsai it's Graham potters nursery he has a good stock of soils plus he mixes his own there good for the uk as we get a lot of rain so there free draining but also hold enough moisture for warm days. Those soils it's hard to over water them. Also check out corin tomlinson nursery greenwood bonsai nursery that's in nottingham it's where I get my trees and material plus corin is really friendly and helpfull he will give you loads of advice and repot it for you for a small fee in good soil.
