It may be a really sick Elm, then.

A Non-sai? Can you elaborate?

I just asked my friend and she told me all the seller told her is that it gives white flowers in summer (we are in the middle of winter here).

how do you know is sick? and what should I do about it?

The ones in the top are more yellowish, the ones in the bottom are a darker green

thank you-

Well, I guess it depends on your definition of 'Mallsai' and I don't think an official definition exists.
名媛直播4me says:
"Typically, beginners bonsai are purchased from garden centres, shopping malls and chain stores. Almost all originate from China and Israel and are mass produced trees that have been cultivated on large bonsai 'farms' before being lifted and planted directly into a bonsai pot. The result is a tree that is relatively cheap to buy, but will be in poor health, growing in very poor soil and with little in the way of styling other than some trimming of the tree's silhouette"
( )

So, the plant would be grown on a 'bonsai farm', it would have had some bonsai-styling. It would technically be a bonsai, but a low quality / low priced one.

This is no such thing. This is a decorated plant with no styling. It does not look like a species that is usually used for bonsai, at least, I don't recognize it.
So, IMHO, it's not a bonsai. Or if you will, a non-sai indeed.

Can your friend ask the seller what species it is? They should know best.

how do you know is sick

We don't. Hard to tell without knowing the species, it might be the normal growth habit of the plant.

It's yellow, so I assumed it's sick.
