I have never had one but my fig ficus lives in a window and has lost its leaves the past three years in the winter and then they grow back in the spring. I asume that your questionable face means that the ginseng ficus is more of a tropical ficus? The ginseng plant is native to the Carolina's in the States and it does get a bit cold there.? I should add a signature to all of my postsAuk wrote:

Posted 8 years 6 months ago #23210A fig that drops its leaves has typically experienced some form of shock, be it being moved into a very different (drier) environment, drying out of the rootball or something similar. It is NOT normal for a fig to drop the leaves in winter.

Ginseng Panax spp. and fig Ficus spp. are completely different types of plants.
Ginseng ficus is a variety of fig F. microcarpa, so called, because the bulbous root is similar to ginseng.
And ginseng, the perennial, grows all over the northern hemisphere, not just Carolina.

I know Ginseng is native to many other areas. I was pointing out (worthlessly) That it gets colder there and the plant thrives. I knew that the two species were completely different, but assumed the tree and plant shared some characteristics. Now that you say it, the roots make perfect sense for a relational namesake. My roots look very similar to bulbous ginseng, and they swell and grow fast under the soil.

That's fine. It does mean you should be a bit more careful with your statements and verify them first - like I normally do.
