Epic tree? This is not going to happen in your lifetime, sorry to say.. To get an epic tree, put these in the garden, forget about them and buy epic material. The really amazing trees you see at (inter)national exhibitions are trees which age & development times are measured in decades to centuries, not in a few years.

You will need to grow these to get trunks of several cm thick. Think 5cm thick for a 40cm tall tree. This will take a decade of ground-growing. Putting them into a larger pot is not effective at this stage: The plants are too small to use the larger volume, which means the soil stay wet longer than needed. I would say you can pot it in a larger container once the second plant is twice its size. Probably easier to just put them in the garden, en move them every 3-4 years. Consider growing them in a colander, dug into the ground.

The wire can come off when the branches have set. Wiring in early stages is a good idea, as it will heklp the trunkline to set while still young and flexible.

The same as what LB said in his post. Put it in the garden and forget about it. If you really want an epic tree, I'd advise you to tell your (future?) grand children to start learning about bonsai so you can pass it on to them.

If you want a nice-ish tree, do the same, but leave it in the ground for at least a couple of years until it has developed a usable trunk. You could go for a very small size bonsai. The second tree does seem to have the potential for that. Less epic, but can still be very attractive (and a bit harder to care for due to the small size and little amount of soil in the small pot).

BTW the first plant doesn't seem very healthy and actually close to death (not dead though, so it still may recover).

I think you first need to decide what size and what style of bonsai you want to create.
