ulmus parvifolia. looks to me to be the hokkaido cultivator.
larger leaves than a seiju but smaller then a catlin. if it is the hokkaido the branches are brittle and they are shaped more with pruning than wire
. have you considered cleaning off the moss to reveal the trunk?

moss will grow up the trunk naturally, but it is a technique used to age the bark
if you want to, pick off what you can with your fingers then go at it with a tooth brush.i bet its covering some great nebari too

Moss looks nice, but it actually does two things that are not so good:
- It blocks the soil for water: When dry, it is hard to get moss to absorp any water. And when wet, it is slow allowing water to drain into the soil beneath. So when watering, you get runoff of water to the edged of the pot, and the core of the soil may dry out completely
- On the opposite side: It blocks the soil from evaporating water. This means that the soil stays wet for longer, when properly watered, and it block air circulating.
Both things increase the risk of root-trouble. This is the main reason why most bonsai only have moss when they are getting ready for exhibition, which is removed again when it is back in the growers' garden.
