falling leaves

I recently received a bonsai tree as a gift for Christmas. I live in an apartment that only has a north facing window in MN. We bought extra lights for it and leave them on during the day when we're gone, so I'd say the tree gets about 8 hours of artificial light and one hour of natural light. In the last few days almost all the leaves on the bottom branch closest to the window fell off. The tree is about a foot away from the window and it's cold but definitely above 60 degrees (current temp is about zero outside.) All the leaves on the top are fine and green. I watered it 1/4 cup water two days ago when the leaves were starting to look wrinkled. There have been a few new leaves sprouting but all original leaves fell off on this low branch. I am thinking it needs to be moved farther from the window but wondering if you guys could think of anything else that could be wrong or what this could mean. Will the leaves come back or is this serious damage?

did you wire this or was it recieved that way. i ask becuase in my expierience jades do not get wired. they are brittle so you may have broken internal structure of the branch. jades do not need a ton of light and not much water either . the soil needs to be very fast draining i have grown them in strait gravel

I agree with all said above; it does need a lot of light though and definitely not too much water.
Good luck!

When I got the tree it was wired. I was told it was to help shape it and for support. Upon closer inspection the lowest branch does seem a little "loose" and has a little notch on the underside. It's not deep but most likely that's the cause. I'm wondering if my cat pushed up on it as he likes to sit by it and is of course curious. I think all I can do is support the branch and hopefully it comes back. It has lost all it's leaves and no new leaves have sprouted. I'm hoping things will improve once winter passes and it gets back to ideal conditions.
I'm wondering if maybe there's something I can put on the notch to seal it?
