New tree acquired. No idea of species. was created by afd359

I am a bonsai beginner. I have a ficus 'too little' I have had for several months that I am trying to prune to formal style and a juniper I purchased that I am trying to cascade. These two are doing great.

My father in law knows my interest in bonsai and a friend of his had this tree that they "couldn't do anything with". It has no foliage and was somewhat dry when I received it. I pruned it slightly, removing some of the thin branches. When I did this, there was green inside and these wounds have already healed. By that, I'm guessing the tree is still somewhat healthy. Here is where I need help:

1. Any idea of the species?
2. Is it supposed to drop leaves since it is fall or was it because of stress?
3. Any tips?

Thanks!!

Welcome to the art of bonsai, thats a spekboom, or Portulacaria Afra, I haven't a clue why its without leaves, it should have leaves year round. Place on a warm windowsill and avoid overwatering, let the soil dry out before watering. good luck ;)

Thank you! It was very dry when I got it. I let it sit outside the other evening during a good rain to try and thoroughly water it. I brought it in and placed some water in the humidity tray. I have it out on my sunroom where the ficus and other plants are doing very well. I'm hoping the foliage will come back and I can make something out of this tree. I did notice that in the soil there was green fertilizer pellets, I was thinking of yanking them out. Could it maybe of been over-fertilized??

we cannot know from this perspective, it is because of stress or drought. i used to try and know everything precisely but every tree is different even those of the same species. but we do not know why it has lost it's leaves.

also you need to be able to take some criticism on the things you say(like i just did) but it is only good because you learn from it.

I have a spekboom, and Iv'e noticed the leaves swell and drop off if watered too often, in my case it hasn't been to much of a problem since new leaves are always shooting up all over the place. Perhaps it is too cold where you are, its a Savannah type plant and loves warms, try keep it indoors in a warm spot and hopefully new leaves will shoot.

it is some spiecies of jade tree ,they can go months without water.it is definatly not dead because it would be shriveled up. since you have watered it leave it in a sunny spot and leaves should form.the soil should be gravel/sandy in consistancy and shouldnt have any "dirt" .overwatering will cause leaf drop, the leaves will sprout roots and new trees grow .this is how they reproduce in the desert during the rainy season they are fast growers and are trained by cutting and bud selection, wireing cant be done

Update!!!

So, I have watered the tree after the soil became dry and have it located in my sunroom. A ficus and other plants thrive in this room. Now this new tree's branches are starting to "shrivel" up and the tree really doesn't look to be doing anything. PLEASE HELP

Sorry to say but.. That's a goner..

Don't feel top bad. From the looks in the first picture, it was already on it's way out when you got it. Looks like the roots rotted away. Probably it has been too wet while cold and/or dormant. Once you decide for yourself that the plant is indeed dead, check the rootbal. It probably has for a large part desintegrated.
