I bought this azalea last year and just repotted it this morning. I washed off the roots so that the nice roots at the base of the plant are exposed. I had to scrub them a little because they were slimy, so I tried to clean the plant as much as I could. It had some standing water around the pot and I think it must have gotten some mold or algae in there. It has been outside all winter.
I pruned the branches a lot last summer, and I just did a little yesterday, but I was wondering if anyone has any styling ideas?

hmmm... Styling ideas... What color flowers does the plant grow, and how big do the leaves get? So far an easy bet would be the broom style which the plant is already tending towards. But with so many branches to cut, there's so many styles to choose from. If you willing to do a big chop you could go for nearly any bonsai style. Its a really mature looking tree, so think wisely, you could go for twin trunk, windswept or even slanting. Its all up to you

I should bent most branches downwards to turn it from a vegetative into a generative growth.
Succes!

Thank you for the idea! I'm going to let it get used to its new pot and then I'm going to go out and see how flexible the branches are. It's a well established plant so it isn't too limber, but I was reading the training section on this site and the part about stretching looks like it would work for this tree. I actually did that with one of my trees today. I heard some bonsai enthusiasts will weight down the branches in order to get them to bend down. I'm thinking of investing in some large fishing weights and some raffia and using that to weight down the branches in order to get them to look more like an old tree, instead of using wire to do it. Thank you for the suggestion!
