here's a couple junipers that i just began shaping. i was thinking of trying to make a bonsai forest out of these trees, in the future.

here are the progressive pictures of the process of pruning wiring, and shaping. comments or suggestions are welcome.:)

Hi!

Good material, if you want to make a bonsai forest, these are good trees for it. They have all straight trunks with not too many branches on them.

One little suggestion in shaping: The branches are now wired horizontal but the branches are very straight if you know what I mean, in picture 5 from abover to under counted, you can see this good.

But you have done a great job, I would love to see the progressions in the future! :)

thanks. and, i see what you mean. needs a little more action in the branches. do you think they need more vertical-down angle, like the other ones? or, just a little more side to side action?

side note, i was also wondering if i should do more with the jin? i was wondering if i should jin the top two branches as well, either partially or fully; or extend it further down the trunk, or just leave as is for now?

I think you should take the branches more horizontal, slightly downwards but not too much. I would let the trees leave for now, if you want to make a forest out of it, it is nice that there are also trees that don't have a 'jin-top'.

The Jin looks nice to me, but those two heavy top-branches are a bit too thick when compared to the other branches. Not saying you should take them out, but this is just my initial thought.
Let the tree recover for some months, it will definitely need some time to recover.

yeah, i thought the same thing. i wasn't sure what to do with them, they look like they have potential but they do look out of proportion to the lower ones. maybe breaking them short and making jin out of them? i don't know, what you guys think i could do with them?

anybody have any suggestions about what i should do with the top big branches on the juniper, the one with the jin on top? they seem out of place in size.

Hi babybird,

If you were to remove these two heavy branches would they not back-bud and become smaller branches? I'm not sure of this however, it is a suggestion. Or, as you suggested, shorten them to create Jin and they still may make new, smaller branch shoots at the trunk as well. Perhaps you could also check out some images in the Gallery and/or google bonsai images to see how others have creatd jin at the top of their trees?
These are looking great. Keep up the good work. :)
