Hello,

I have a bonsai zelkova for 1 year. 3 month ago it started to drop its leaves day by day.
My maitenance habits (watering, place in the room, etc.) don't change at all.
I think the tree is dying, but I don't know the root cause. I cut the main parts, it seems to be too dry.

Any ideas?

You have it inside that is the main problem. But without more information it is impossible to say more.

Your zelkova is most likelly a chinese elm. True Zelkovas is quite rare to find. But chinese elms are intentional misslabled by the industry to get them easier thrue customs. Dutch elm desease beeing the reason for doing so.

I does not look good, impossible to say what has happened apart from being inside. Could be lack of water as well, but it looks dead.

Try the scratch test-scratch a little on the lower bark and if it is brown underneath try another spot to scratch for a retest. If that one is also brown then it is dead. If you see green underneath, then it is still alive.

Just because it is green under the bark does not mean it will recover, it may it may not

It is a start. I had one that did that and that I recovered. They told me to do the scratch test first.

The scratch test do not help the tree at all. It is just damaging it.

BTW: looking on the photos it seems like a kind of scratch test is already done. Just a lot deaper cut than usual.
