I have azalea bonsai. And it seems that I cannot get on with it.

For the second time during the last 4 months my tree looses all leaves. The first time happened in May, after I left for 5 days. Probably I watered it too much after my absence. I also notices white plaque on the bottom of the trunk (photo 1).

I continued to water it a little and 15-20 days later tree gave new green leaves (photo 2). Although white plaque still stayed.
But one month later probably I watered it too much once, so that the leaves twisted and withered.

45 days left and there are no new leaves. White plaque is still on the trunk. I can easily take the tree with the soil out of the pot (photo 3). On the bottom of the soil I can see something white (photo 4).

Is there anything I could do for the tree?

What is the growing conditions?

It is quite warm. 22-25℃ I guess. The air is quite dry. The flower stands near the window and receives diffused sunlight. Sometimes at night I open the window and then cold air comes in. The temperature can drop to 15 degrees.
I bought the tree at the beginning of the year and haven`t transplanted it yet. Don`t now when was the last transplantation.

The reason you are killing this plant is because it is inside. Full stop. Put it outside, in shade at first, Water it when needed and do not re pot. Take the wire off, it is strangling the plant. It may recover it may not. Don't keep taking it out of the pot.

I am sorry to say. An evergreen tree that have lost it's leafs two times in the growing season is not strong enough for the winter. They need to grow strong all season to make it. Keeping it with sufficient light at minimum 5 degrees may make it come true winter alive, but chanse is low. Frost will kill it for sure, so do living room conditions.

Next time read up on the species before you buy and always stay away from indoor trees. There are not one single tree in the world that live naturally in livingroom conditions.

I do not think correct watering will save an indoor grown azalea.

The rootcause of the problem does not seem to be it being inside -which is an issue-, but in incorrect watering.

I think Geoff gave the complete answer. Both indoor keeping and watering is an issue. What is the rootcause is not relevant. If one wants a healthy tree every issue must be corrected. The only thing not yet mentioned is hard water. Azaleas just hate it and will die from it, just like it will die from indoor keeping or incorect watering. So check your water hardness and correct If it is hard.
