Hi all, my mother bought me a bonsai tree for my birthday back in April.
Since then it’s looked worse and worse and I cant work out why.
I’ve watered it so it feels slightly damp to the touch, But I’ve been careful to not over water.
It’s been fed several occasions as well.
I’ve attached some pictures below. Any help/advice that I can use to try and recover this tree would be greatly appreciated.
It’s upsetting me and her that I have not looked after it, the leaves went dark then fell off. And now any fresh green leaves have wilted. The plant is only growing in small sections now.
I’ve had it for 6 weeks and I’ve managed to harm it.
Devastating.

First it should be outside, next it looks very dry. In this weather you should be watering every day, as it will be drying out a lot. Stop fertiliser too early in the year. Hope.

This tree a few months ago had a beautiful canopy. Now there may be 15 or 20 leaves on it, and some flowers. Note the pic and all the dead branches. What happened or what did

I dont think that anyone here can tell you what you did or not did to the tree. But maybe if you tell us someone might have an idea of what went wrong.

Well I'm not sure. I really didn't prune. Maybe a watering issue. But I have no idea. But thanks anyway.

Hmm, yes most likelly. But water every day? With the weather we have had the last few weeks I water every other day. I am sure there are places outside Artic that has had both colder and more rain than we had.

Most trees should be outside all the time. Some tropicals should be outside when the weather is above 10C/50F, which varies by local climate. In Birmingham, Alabama, I brought them out in March. In Colorado this week it was still too cold.
Watering should be done just before the soil dries out. If it is in well draining soil that means every say, usually, but it depends completely on the soil and the climate. Low humidity will dry out faster and lots of sun will dry out faster.

I wasn’t able to see the photos you attached, but I would note in my experience that a fertilizer with high nitrogen should be avoided when working with the Japanese Maple bonsai. Often times traditional liquid fertilizer encourages rapid vegetation growth, yet the root systems are unable to keep up which then leads to the death of the plant. Avoid over fertilization and make sure your bonsai remains outside when not being admired (but avoid water on the leaves)
