Chinese Elm has fungus but no fungicide is working was created by Mgm21

Hi all,

I’ve had my Chinese elm since last July and in the last two months it seems to have developed a mysterious fungus. It has sticky leaves (but no insects) and often the new leaves that grow are distorted and some die very early on. I’ve treated it with fungicide several times and trimmed the affected parts, but it doesn’t seem to have any impact. The plant has recently had a growth spurt but the leaves have begun dying again. As a side note, the bark doesn’t seem to be in great condition and has some white patches and it’s a bit damaged, but I think it’s been like that since I first got it so I’m not sure that’s relevant. I’m not an experienced bonsai carer so any advice would be much appreciated!

That soil looks very very dry, and, more important, why is it inside?

True it does look dry, I was overwatering before so I have been careful to not as I know it can cause fungus. And it’s not outside as it’s an indoor bonsai and the weather has been too cold to leave it outside.

There is no such thing as an indoor tree. Unless its below -5 this tree needs to be outside.
99% of the help my tree is dying/has this or that problem is from people with socalled indoor trees.
If its not freezing, place it outside in the sun, give it a good shower with the garden hose or a watering can and leave it there. You will see your tree will regain its strength

I see... I had no idea! I believe it’s meant to snow tomorrow so it might be a shock to the tree but perhaps I will try and leave it outside the day after when it’s a bit warmer. Thanks for the advice :)

If its still snowing you can start by placing it in an unheated frostfree light room/garage/garden shed. And work your way gradually from there to outside when temps go up a bit. From living room temps directly into snow could be a bit too much for an already stressed plant.
