Hi there,
So I got my Chinese elm in December 2020, and since then I’ve never really had to water it because the soil is constantly so moist.
I’ve put in my bio gold capsules recently, but have still not had to water it at all. There is now mould growing on the surface of the soil I’m guessing due to the fertiliser and moisture.
Is this ok for the bonsai ? Or should I repot it with a better draining soil ? And if I do will this have an effect on growth this season?
Many thanks in advance.

If the tree is out in the weather then I doubt it would need watering, mine don't. Fertiliser at this time of year is not a good idea, and will do no good. If you have tried to water and it does not run through the soil then it needs re potting, otherwise there would be no reason to re pot.

I keep mine inside, shouldn’t that mean it should dry out just a little as it’s been about 3 months since it’s last water ? I’m just a little worried about root rot as it’s been kept in moist soil for so long.
Thank you for your reply

Does you Chinese Elm still have leaves? If not it won't use water much.

As you can see in the picture the tree is budding and looks healthy, I have scraped a load of mould off the surface of the soil this morning.

It does look green and health.
You also checked that there are no other people in the house watering your plants?

This is kept in my room so no one else touches it.
Surely soil kept this wet will damage the tree soon ?

I wonder if there are holes in the bottom of the pot and it is full of water.

It’s got a hole with a few roots coming through. I bought the bonsai like this, could it be the soil could be poor quality and retain too much water ?

Whats the temprature in your room?
Because i can't keep any of my plants in normal potting soil so wet/moist as you have for 3months in a row.
When i was young and was living with my parents, i had a bouch of cactusses in my room. I was proud for years and years that they grew so well, without me ever watering them. Always thought it was the water condensation from my windows that kept them alive. Until only years after, my mom told me see watered them, as she assumed i never did.
