Hi everyone,

I've had a bonsai tree for about 4 months and he's loosing a lot of leaves. There is new growth at the base, which has growth very quickly. However the tree is starting to go a little bare!

He lives on a windowsill and gets a lot of sunlight
I water him every few days and ensure the water seeps out the base of the pot
I have never repotted him and rarely use the feed

Can anyone help?

Your tree is inside, that's the problem. There is no such thing as an indoor tree. Not one tree in the entire world lives naturally indoors...
If temps in your part of the world are still above lets say 10, with no sub zero temps at night you could place it outside where it belongs. If temps are already lower place it in an unheated room, and hope it survives till spring when it can go outside where it belongs.

A note. LucR is correct, but if you are in the US you want to use temps of 50F and 32F, not 10 and 0.

Let me add a note too. This tree is an Ulmus or zelkova i guess. This kind of trees loose the leaves when the autumn comes. The other mate is right about the situation of the tree, but overall, if the tree loose their leaves in autumn, is their natural cycle.
Take the tree outside and be careful with the under zero temperatures.

Funny to make recommendations if you do not know which species it is.

It is ulmus parvifolia. They do not per se drop their leaves, even in frosty situations. Mine stay green through most of winter, and only when it really freezes for a few days does it drop the leaves.

Mate, Ulmus and zelkova, both of them are caducifolios or semi-caducifolios. If they don't drop the leaves, that's not natural at all.
I speak for the experience of elms in spain, and it's not my purpose to be absolutely right.

And I speak opf experience in growing THIS EXACT species that they do not drop their leaves every winter. It IS natural.

If you have to "guess" it is "zelkova or ulmus" it is best to not make recommendations on wether or not it is a problem that leave are or are not dropping.

Jajajajajaja mate! dont be so unpleasant! I can see you are veteran in this forum, and i guess you are not used to be contradicted.

Zelkova are in ulmaceas family, and this kind of trees are caducifolios. I only want to give and advice.

If i am wrong, please tell me, but do it appropriately
