As a newbie I have a ton of questions but first things fist.
I bought a bonsai for my new girlfriend as a university graduation gift. Years passed, girfiend became my wife and the bonsai became a tree like. My mother in law planted it at a regular pot as soon as I gave it to them. After 10 years this old friend is at my possession. I have no recollection of the type of the tree. I was wondering if there is a hope to bring it back to bonsai. I am a newbie and I am having very hard time to search correct. I cant find similar articles or videos telling how to treat this situation. The lack of correct terminology plus the fact that English is not my language makes things worst.
I would appreciate some advices on where to look and what to search!

Yes, you can chop it down to almost the roots and it will sprout again in many places. But...
Do it in the Spring, March or April in Athens, and by the time the summer is over, say September, it should be full of possible branches to create a new silhouette.
Take care of it in the winter, they hate temperatures below 10°C when outdoors.
Good luck!

It is really funy that I was realy hoping to be something more than a ficus and had not realise that!!
On the other hand, it is a good plant to start with, and experiment!
Thanks again!

Posted 4 years 4 months ago #62168To get it back to bonsai, first need it to get it back to shining health. It looks like it is kept indoors. Summer is waning in the nothern hemisphere so you might be a little late to bring this outside.
In general, the tree needs to be cut back, hard. But I would do this not now, but in spring when the growing cycle starts.

It was kept outside, on a northeast facing terrace, for almost 9 years.leatherback wrote: It looks like it is kept indoors. Summer is waning in the nothern hemisphere so you might be a little late to bring this outside.
But I have no idea how it was treated.

Yeah, after posting it last night I kept wondering "this is a weird looking ficus...".
Might be a privet alright.
Fact is both species can be a convincing bonsai.
So once again, to chop it down, wait for the Spring.
