Chinese Elm Leaves Browning and Falling Off was created by Buffy Fan
Posted 4 years 8 months ago #58794I have a 9 year old Chinese Elm, which I got in December. I kept it in the back room on a window ledge that faces north. It was healthy and growing well, and it needed a lot of pruning due to how quickly it was growing. This was in winter/ spring. However, about a month ago, I noticed that, suddenly - and without warning - leaves were losing colour. Some just faded and then fell off, some turned yellow, some turned brown, and some had splodges of colour. The most recent ones that fell off - last night - had black on them.
I moved the tree to the front room on a bright window sill. Some days, no leaves fall or change. Other days, maybe one or two change colour and fall. Last night, TEN changed after a few days of it not dropping anything.
I thought it was the lack of fertiliser, as I only fertilised it sporadically. I now give it a small amount - a solution of 1.2ml in 250ml of water - once a week. I have experimented with giving it less and more water, too, or skipping a fertiliser session. No matter what I do, it is completely random as to if the leaves change colour and fall off overnight or not.
It still has new growth; it has plenty of new shoots and replacements for the leaves it is dropping.
As you can see from the photo of it on the table, taken in the middle of February, it was much healthier before the leaves started falling.

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with it? I am at a loss. I am starting to worry, however, that it picked up a disease from pruning. I did not realise you had to sterilise the bonsai trimmers each time. I left them out next to the tree. I hope someone can help!
P.s, sorry for any typos!

Posted 4 years 8 months ago #58797Then, lack of light, sun, fresh air, wind and rain.
It should be outdoors, trees don't like to be inside for prolonged periods of time.
Trees lose leaves all the time, and new ones grow, it is normal.
Doesn't look like any disease from your pruning tools.
Put it outside, in dappled sun, water when the soil isn't moist and check it regularly.

Posted 4 years 8 months ago #58798Also don't change the watering and feeding so much.
Hold back on the fertiliser until it is growing healthy again.
Only water when the soil if almost dry to touch.

Posted 4 years 8 months ago #58799As othrs have said, move this outside. Protect it for direct sun for a few weeks as trees can get sunburn if they have been out of the sun for winter.

Posted 4 years 8 months ago #58807I should mention that being on the Scottish border, the climate isn't very warm. Most days - even in summer - are mild and/or cold.

Where are you off the Scottish border? Sounds like we could be close.

Posted 4 years 8 months ago #58822They are outside all year round.
As winters here in Milan, northern Italy, are no longer as cold as when I was a kid (no more snow, just 2-3 days per year to -5 Celsius, never below), they do not drop leaves at all in autumn.
So the leaves show a nice vibrant green all winter until spring - then many (not all) discolour, get yellow and drop (apparently in the wrong season!!!), leaving room and energy for new buds to extend. And they are so vigorous!
Therefore... imho, your tree look perfectly fine to me.

Posted 4 years 8 months ago #58832I actually have to quote myself, as I happened to read again my message and realize I wrote exactly the opposite of what I meant...Ricky73 wrote: Hello, I have two little Chinese Elms mallsais that behave like this, yet they strive since years...

It should have been "Hello, I have two little Chinese Elms mallsais that behave like this, yet they THRIVE since years..."

What soil mix are you using for your Chinese elms Ricky?
