Identifying My 名媛直播 was created by wheatonfootball64

I'm attempting to identify my tree - I think it might be a European Spruce. Any thoughts?

Also, the needles and branches in general have been really brittle the last few months and I've been trying to nurse it back to health, although I'm wondering if it is already dead or is continuing to slowly die. I was pretty aloof and kept it in a darkened room for several month before realizing it probably needed sun. Then I realized it wasn't retaining water and changed the soil mixture in order to help it be better able to retain water. Now I'm realizing I don't even fully know what kind of tree it is! There's a pattern here. Haha. Any thoughts on care for the tree and/or getting it healthier if it is still alive would be appreciated. Thanks!

That would explain why it seems dead to me, too.

I'm curious what the signs of it being dead are to you? I'm totally new to this so I'd like to learn.

color of the foliage tells a lot. junipers can die and you wont even notice till weeks later. im sure if you touch the foliage its sharp or maybe even brittle and will just fall right off.

Your juniper has been dead for half a year.

kept it in a darkened room for several month before realizing it probably needed sun. Then I realized it wasn't retaining water

No water and no sun. That's what killed the poor thing.

Also, junipers must be outdoors.

:cheer: Yeah....lessons learned. I had wondered as much but had really hoped that somehow it would miraculously come back to life. Next time, I will do my due diligence and figure out what kind of tree I have so I can actually care for it well. It was good while it lasted!

Any trees you would recommend for a newbie? I'm living in Chicago now but will be moving to Hawaii later this year. Would love to try it again with a new bonsai.

I'd recommend to wait until after you've moved to Hawaii.
A local species would be a good idea (if you want to grow your own bonsai, which does require study, time, patience, etc.. etc..):

I am not familiar with these trees though. There's a juniper on the list (junipers are in general a good choice) but I don't know how suitable this variety is.
Maybe they are... see:

So, there is a Hawaii bonsai association. They will be able to tell you about bonsai in Hawaii.

Maybe before you move to Hawaii, ask Google about a bonsai society close to where you will be living. Find their website and ask what good bonsai subjects there would be for local trees. Once you move, go to some meetings and find out what people do and when.
If nothing else, it would be a good way to meet people.
