Hello is it possible to preform Scion grafting on a ficus retusa described in:
www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/cultivation/advanced/grafting-trees
Want to try add small secondary side branches.
Tips appreciated.

Why not just let them grow naturally I wonder. It probably could work. But.. Unless you are grafting another species, I do not see the need, considering how easily they backbud.

I got this ficus one year ago. Defoliated it once in the summer. Been growing good but no backbudding on the main branches.
Any suggestion?

Never tried it myself, but ficus species often self-graft even involuntarily. That would suggest the success rate of approach grafting should be very high...

It is indeed.
The point Leatheback was stressing is that you don't need any grafts on a ficus. You trim it, you chop it or you prune it hard, and voilá! It backbuds alright.

WHat is growing good to you? I am thinking, getting a leaf every other or even every week on branches. That is healthy growth in summer. Once you reach health, defoliate AND clip the terminal buds from the branches.

Errr, nice picture..
The primary branches on my ficus is about 2cm I diameter.
If I want a secondary branch on a specific spot I could prune hard and pray to Jebus that a branch will appear.
Thought that this is the nr1 forum for bonsai someone had tried scion grafting ficus...

Could you post a picture of your ficus?

Not sure what you are saying? I got backbudding on the main trunk. It is not about size, it is about health and technique.

But year, grafting on ficus can be done, and works well. Just look at all the ginseng figs.
