How Many Seeds? was created by StrongMusic6

I am just starting my 名媛直播 journey and I am curious as to how many seeds I should go through the process and then eventually plant. I apologize if this seems like a silly question. I have tried to google it and the starter kit I purchased is not clear on the amount I should plant. Thank you in advance.

Hi and welcome.

I think it is important to realize that most bonsai are not grown from seed. Rather, they are created from much larger trees that are reduced to fit. The main reason for this is the need to have a sizable trunk for a convincing bonsai.

That being said, I am also growing stuff from seed. As there is no such thing as seed for bonsai I just order a hundred or more seeds from an online treeseed dealer and plant all. That gives me loads to experiment on, give away and in the end be left with mabe one or two plants that I want to keep.

in general, germination rates vary a lot from species to species. Some will have 90% of the seeds germinate. Others will be below 20%.

I picked up a dozen fresh gingko seeds. Three sprouted, two died immediately, and the other one died over the next winter.
I got several dozen elm seeds in the Netherlands. None sprouted.
I pulled a large handfull of seeds from an elm here in town and wound up with 31 elm trees. Two have died but that was a watering issue.
About half of my pots have trees growing from seeds that have magically appeared. Pines, several sycamores, a couple of sweet gums, and five or six I can't identify. Why do they grow when what I want doesn't?

So, if you want to use seeds, get a lot.

However, let's do some arithmetic. If you want your bonsai to be a thirty year tree, with seeds it will take thirty years. (OK, thirty one because they will sprout next year.) If you get a five year old nursery tree, it will take twenty five years. I just dug up some sixteen year old azaleas, and it will only take fourteen years. I also dug up a boxwood that has been in front of the house 33 years, and instantly I have my thirty year old tree. Next spring I will dug up the azalea that has been on the side of the house the same 33 years. Instant gratification.

Sowed two dozen Beech seeds last spring.
Not even one sprouted.
Sowed two dozen more yesterday, after three months in the fridge.
Let's see.
Sowed 12 BRT seeds last year.
All sprouted, as well as Jacarandás, Delonix, Tamarinds, Ironwoods.
I am in a tropical country.
BRTs are tropicals, beechs are not.

The true fact is the seeds are controlled because they risk extinction.
I may be able to get 30 seeds in a package, but I have to check the price plus shipping.
I am not a vendor, this is only a friendly help, if you really want them.
