Black Pine (?) all needles turning brown!!! was created by ClosetNarnian
Posted 5 years 11 months ago #46883My black pine (I'm pretty sure that's what it is) seems to be dying after a year and a half. I planted it from a seed and have cared for it until now. All seemed to be well and I gave it to a friend to care over the five weeks I was away for Christmas. I'm not sure it was watered enough, and now it seems to be dying. We've kept it indoors because I live in the UK and I wasn't sure it would be okay in the varying temperature outside.
It could also be that I haven't re-potted since planting, and haven't used fertilizer (I didn't know I should). I'm afraid the nutrient content of the pot probably gone but I'm scared to re-pot since the tree already looks weak... (see photos).
Please, any advice would be amazing!! Should I start to fertilize immediately? Should I re-pot immediately? Water it way more?

Are you saying that that plant on the picture is a year and a half old? That's not good. It's far too small to be that age.
You cannot keep black pines indoors.

The problem is the tree being in the wrong climate.
There is no 'immediately' in bonsai (except maybe when there's a storm and your pots get blown off the shelf).

Posted 5 years 11 months ago #46886Second: all that moss, did you put it there or did it grow on its own? If so, your soil is waaaay to wet.If you put it there: don't do that !,
Third: is there a hole in that porcelain pot so the water can run through? If not, see second.
Four: brown needles means the end with pines ( with the exception of the older (3 years) needles becoming brown and falling off which is normal). Problem with pines when you see something it's usually too late to do something, it takes a long time for needles to become brown and by then it's too late

Welcome to the Empire. It's daily routine, people not knowing what they purchased, not knowing how to take care of it, some even claiming they have never grown anything before, suddenly deciding to start growing bonsai without the foggiest idea of what they are getting into or even doing the slightest research, thinking you can grow a bonsai by planting a seed and keeping it small.
To me, it's like purchasing a penguin, putting it in a dog house, indoors, close to the heater as it might get cold, feeding it honey and milk, calling it a dog, and asking, after it hasn't moved anymore for 7 weeks, looking at the smelly body, what to do and if they should give it more milk, put it in a larger doghouse and give it more honey so it gets stronger.
OK, I do exaggerate a bit sometimes.

Posted 5 years 11 months ago #46889Now i will take a walk in the field to find some nice potential bonsai. If i find something i make a post later. Maybe that can bring the standard up a bit.

Posted 5 years 11 months ago #46938In the future, I'll do much more research before attempting to grow a bonsai tree and I hope, despite my ignorance, you'll be kind and patient with a beginner like myself.
Thank you once again.
