Hello, I am Thomas and currently writing on a scientific work about bonsai called: "A historical-cultural and biological-systematic description". At the time I am searching for literature, including books, articles or any other form of written text concerning everything about bonsai, it's history, cultural aspects, biological structure etc. Maybe other users are interested as well, so feel free to share your knowledge about bonsai literature.

How long have you been growing bonsai? How many trees do you have and how many are show worthy ?

In fact, I am not that much into bonsai yet and the scientific work is more like a pre-scientific work i have to do for school, hence far apart an approved document. Nevertheless I am very interested in the art of bonsai. My father is growing bonsai for some years now and i recently found out that it's amazing. In our collecting we have nothing speacial to show, my father likes to experiment with local tree typs but they are all not of great age.

Can't write a cookbook if you can't cook.

That is obvious and I do appreciate your critique, but I don't want to write a guide or "cookbook". I want to gain a better insight in the historical and cultural aspects of bonsai art, as well as work out some characteristics bonsai trees show regarding there morphology. All based on literature and perceptions, which already exist. I don't think i have to know how to cook or handle a bonsai tree the exact right way, in order to acquire some knowledge about them and write it down in my own words. As I said, it is only a pre-scientific work, nothing too serious.

Now, I'm not a scientist but 'biological-systematic'? You know that bonsai is not a tree species?

Yeah, I know that. Maybe it is not the perfect term for it, but i want to describe if the morphology is different than by normal grown trees.

Again, I'm not a scientist, but there won't be a difference. It's a normal tree, just smaller.

Ok, I think this conversation leads to nothing. My original thought was to create a topic, where everyone can add some literature about bonsai. Not to discuss the purpose or meaning of my work.

Just trying to figure out what you are trying to write about. I could give you some book titles and links to interesting websites but I'm quite sure you're able use the search function in Amazon books, and to look for information about bonsai using Google. I think it's best if you do your own research as you know what you're looking for.
