Oh and btw the two Maple pics were just to illustrate the difference between a slender tree and one with several years girth growth. Not as far removed from the point when you think about it.

Picture taken from a bad angle - displaying the 'lump' above the first branch.
Tilting the tree 20 pct. to the right and airlayering it above that branch could produce an interesting tree... but I'm not confident enough to try that.

It's freezing now, the tree is outside, but it started leafing out already in this warm winter. The tiny leafs don't seem damaged, I guess it'll do fine. Seems our winter will last a few days only this year, it's almost over again.

At any rate, I like this tree and the direction you're taking it.

there's a rather nice shohin hidden in there and the way the branches are going now it seems like there is no future view for this tree yet..
the way it is now you'll only lose growing years.
maybe a good time to wire down some of the lower branches pointing upwards?
for a tree like the one you posted as example, it would have been nice if your tree had a fork lower on and some more movement in the lower part of the trunk..
aolso there seems to be some inverse taper
maybe you can carve that away
too bad we can't see the nebari..
i see a lot of potential in this one..
i have a similar carpinus .. i looked like yours when i bought it.. (slightly bigger though..)
over 2 years i cut almost 90% of the branches off and also carved away a taper problem from an old cutting wound.

As you can see, I already removed very much - a bit more than I actually wanted.
Yes, I could remove more, but I'm not doing things so quickly anymore - lost too many trees
I'm going to let it grow, trying to make the (unneeded) branch in the iner bend grow fully.

True. I thought it was far too compact, I only thinned it out, hoping for new growth.

Not going to try that. As I wrote, when I tried to bend a branch down, not too far, quite carefully, it snapped right off.
I'll not wire the branches, just prune them.

Yep, but this how I bought it
also there seems to be some inverse taper
Of which I am aware. I mentioned it in the first post.
It crossed my mind I could airlayer it:

But I think I'm not going to do that either.

I do not carve deciduous trees (with one exception)
too bad we can't see the nebari..
That is true. I have not repotted it yet - didn't want to repot it right after buying it - so this year it'll be the first time I have the chance to do that, and I will. I do not expect to find good nebari.
i see a lot of potential in this one..
I'm glad you do. It'll take lots of time though.
