Hm.. Not sure which I like bes; all trees I work on, I like (Else I give them away). Two of the ones which I like and may with time and dedication have upward potential.
one potentilla which I dug up last summer, and died except for 1 branch. Now on track towards a funny cascade:
An olive I have had for some 3 years

Love your olive tree... I have one myself and I?m trying to style it as a Double Trunk (Sokan) since it has a very low, strong first branch at the trunk?s right and as they share the same root system I thought I could give it a try
Do keep us posted with your olive tree, please... In time, I think it would make a magnificent specimen

I think you know my favourite, but I'll post a new picture. It has been un- and rewired, and I'm now working on further definining the foliage pad. It's going to take another year of growth and then it should really start to look like something.

My first bomsai was an elm as well. It is 50+ and is still in good shape. I am in the process of restyling it and it is slow coming back, but I know it will. It has been through a lot and always seems to bounce back. There is a special connection - I know exactly what you meam.

Hard to reply with any certainty - I really liked my mallsai Chinese Elm purchased 15? years ago but tbh it was crap and the cuttings and airlayer taken from it look much more promising, the remainder is buried in the garden at an odd angle to get a ground layer of the remaining decent branch. I think (!) my favourite right now is a Dawn Redwood which I bought as a year old seedling 3 years ago and which now has the look of a substantial established miniature tree, or it might be the Potentilla cutting from the old garden shrub, or possibly the Laburnum weeded out of the garden at least 5 years ago, or... no, can't decide really, love them all, even the ones that bite back when pruning.

I should add - I did a head count a few weeks ago and got to 107, but this does include about a dozen rooted cuttings and some year old seedlings which may or may not do much
